Imagine if you could access all of the Web's content in your language? We are building Lesan, a machine translation system, that enables you to do just that. We have made significant progress and we're excited to share our system with you. In this first Hackathon, we are calling upon interested individuals to help us improve our current system to deliver fluent translation for Ethiopian languages.

Tasks

We have a lot of cool activities ranging from translation, post-editing and alignment. The only requirement is fluency in English and Amharic.

Timeline

The hackathon starts on Monday the 29th of June at 12pm and runs until Monday July the 6th at 5pm. There are three rounds to the hackathon. At each round you will be asked to complete tasks that help improve the machine translation system.

1st Round

Complete a few short tasks to see the level of quality of the work. The reward for completing the qualifying round is free access to Lesan’s instant translator.

2nd Round

You will be asked to align 50 sentences and translate 50 sentences in Amharic and English. The reward for completing this round will be a phone credit voucher from Ethio Telecom.

3rd Round

Translate 100 sentences and align 100 sentences in Amharic and English. You will be rewarded with a cash transfer to your bank account. A total of 7000 birr will be distributed in vouchers and cash payments throughout the hackathon.
